Furnishing an oyster farmer's cabin

Small spaces, raw timber, a view of the water: how to furnish a cabin on Arcachon Bay with compact teak pieces, the measurements and materials to choose.

A restored oyster farmer’s cabin is a place apart: plank walls, often a single room, a door that opens onto the water. People come for the light on the Bay, not for the furniture. That is the whole challenge: furnishing without cluttering, and choosing pieces that can take the humidity of a building set at the water’s edge.

Measure before you choose. In a small space, every centimetre counts. Note the floor area, the width of the door and the position of the windows. Around a table, allow 80 to 90 cm to push a chair back; to move between two pieces of furniture, 60 cm at the very least. Keep the line from the door to the view clear: it is what gives the room its sense of space.

Answer raw timber with wood. Plank walls call for a wood with character. Reclaimed teak, with its knots, cracks and dark patina, sits naturally in a cabin (see where reclaimed teak comes from). Light solid teak, on the other hand, brightens a dark interior. Either way, no glossy varnish: the material is enough.

Think indoors and out. A cabin lives with its doors open, and furniture often moves from the room to the jetty. Check the intended use on each product page: what is marked “Indoor & outdoor” can go outside, what is marked “Indoor only” stays under the roof.

Four pieces that fit in a cabin

  • Orenda100, a 100 cm round table in solid teak, on a single base of slats opening like a corolla: it seats four, and the chairs slip in all the way round. Allow an area of about 2.70 m square.
  • Zia, a reclaimed teak chair with a three-rail back and a seat woven in Ecoline, with no cushion: nothing to bring in when the weather turns.
  • Huma, its reclaimed teak companion, with a band back whose ends curve upwards, also without a cushion.
  • Timor, a very low coffee table in reclaimed teak with a grey patina, on short turned legs: it anchors the seating corner without blocking the view.

All four pieces are made for indoors as well as outdoors. For storage, the stackable Maria and Elsa chairs, in solid teak, free up space when the table goes back to being a simple top.

Keep to the essentials. A table, four seats, a coffee table: that is often enough. In a cabin, empty space is part of the décor, and the eye should go to the water before it goes to the furniture.

Care. A rinse with fresh water when salt has settled, soapy water and a soft brush once or twice a year. Teak left untreated takes on a silver-grey patina that echoes the planks of the cabin.

Photograph the inside of your cabin: Balinaisa.ai places the pieces in it and sends you back the image with the quote, so you can judge the proportions before you choose.
