Reclaimed teak: where does it come from?

Salvaged from old buildings, reclaimed teak keeps its knots, its cracks and its patina. Its story, what it looks like, and the pieces we make from it.

There is nothing cut-price or second-rate about reclaimed teak. It is a wood that has already been used, and that has gained, through that use, what no sawmill can give: a deep colour, a marked grain, the imprint of time.

A wood that has already lived

It is salvaged from old buildings, where it has spent decades drying, settling and taking the light. Taken apart, sorted and cleared of anything damaged, it is reworked by hand to become a new piece of furniture. The precious wood lives on instead of being burnt or thrown away.

Why it is so stable

New wood keeps moving as it dries: it shrinks, can warp and split. Reclaimed teak finished that work long ago. It is still a living wood, breathing with the humidity, but its big movements are behind it.

How to recognise it

A deep grain, a dark patina, knots, fine cracks, sometimes the mark of an old joint: it keeps the trace of what it once was. Two pieces cut from the same batch are never quite identical. These marks are not flaws; they are the very reason to choose this wood.

Reclaimed teak or Grade A solid teak?

Grade A solid teak comes from the heart of the tree: dense, even, rich in oils, it is made for pieces that live outdoors and for clean lines. Reclaimed teak brings texture and character: we mostly use it for indoor pieces, storage, coffee tables, consoles, which bring warmth to a living room.

Our pieces in reclaimed teak

The Cocon and Arang ranges are made from it, from the TV unit to the bookcase.

  • Hangat, a long TV unit that alternates closed and open sections.
  • Naung, a long sideboard with an open niche running through it.
  • Sarang, a bookcase with staggered shelves, like a wall that breathes.

At the showroom in La Teste-de-Buch, lay your hand on the wood: it is the best way to understand the difference.
