A lounge by the pool

Sun lounger, daybed or canopy daybed: how to set up a lounge by the pool, how much space to allow, and how to care for teak after swimming in the pool.

Around a pool, furniture works harder than anywhere else. It stays in the sun all day, takes the water of swimmers who sit down still wet, and has to move as the shade moves. Three questions help you choose, then a few simple habits are enough to keep it.

1. Stretching out, or sharing. The sun lounger is the basic piece: you stretch out on it alone, close to the water, and line them up in twos or fours along the pool. The daybed, wider, takes an afternoon nap, a book, sometimes two people. The canopy daybed does something else again: it brings its own shade, and becomes a destination of its own at the end of the garden.

2. The space to allow. Keep a clear passage of at least one metre between the edge of the pool and the feet of the sun loungers, so people can walk barefoot without stepping over anyone. Between two sun loungers, leave room for a side table. A round daybed or a canopy daybed is best set back, on the quieter side, where people come to rest without being in the way.

3. The sun, which moves round. A pool is enjoyed from midday to evening, and the shade shifts. Wheels, or a slatted roof, save you from chasing the parasol.

Pool water and teak

Solid teak copes with water: the natural oil that soaks its fibres makes it rot-proof. Treated pool water does, however, leave its own deposits as it dries, on wood as on fabric. The simplest thing is not to let them build up:

  1. rinse the most splashed pieces with fresh water from the garden hose at the end of the day, when the season is in full swing;
  2. clean once or twice a season with soapy water and a soft brush, never with a pressure washer;
  3. do not leave a wet towel to dry on a mattress, and take the covers off to wash them at 30 °C or by hand, without a tumble dryer;
  4. bring mattresses and cushions in during prolonged rain.

In the sun, teak will take on a silver-grey patina within a few months. You are free to keep it, or to feed the wood to bring back its golden tone (see the article on patina).

Our pieces for the water’s edge

All three are in solid teak, made for indoors as well as outdoors.

  • Rehat, a sun lounger on wheels with a reclining back: you move it towards the shade or the light as the day goes on.
  • Jupiter, a round daybed edged with khaki rope, with a thick mattress and cream ivory cushions.
  • Langit, a canopy daybed: four posts carry a slatted roof that softens the light.

Between two sun loungers, the Kenza sofa-side table or the Kyoto side table, also in teak, keep a glass and sunglasses within reach. And if your pool is in the Périgord, we deliver as far as the Dordogne.

To judge the space before you choose, photograph the edge of your pool: Balinaisa.ai places the pieces in it and sends you back the image with the quote.
