Furnishing a terrace in Pyla without hiding the view

Low seating, openwork backs, a lounge set facing the water: furnishing a terrace in Pyla-sur-Mer in teak without hiding the view of the Bay.

In Pyla, people buy a house for its terrace, and a terrace for its view: the Bay, the Banc d’Arguin, the tip of Cap Ferret across the channel, and the sun setting straight ahead. Furniture there should know how to stay in the background. A few simple rules for furnishing a Pyla terrace without turning your back on the view, or hiding it.

Stay below the horizon line

When you sit, you look at the view at eye level: anything rising above a low backrest comes between you and the Bay. On a terrace overlooking the water, choose low seating and openwork backs, which let the eye through as well as the light. Keep tall pieces (parasol, canopy bed, large plant) to the sides, never in the middle of the line of sight.

Turn the lounge set towards the water

The instinct is to line the sofa up against the house, facing the garden. In Pyla, do the opposite: the sofa with its back to the house, the lounge chairs on either side, the coffee table between them, and nothing in front. You talk at an angle and all look at the same thing. Allow around sixty centimetres between the seat and the coffee table so people can pass without making others stand up.

Think about wind and sand

On the dune, the west wind blows often and sand gets everywhere. A solid teak lounge set does not blow away; a lounge set without cushions has nothing to bring in at night. For gardens on loose ground, the article on sandy gardens covers the bases that hold, and the one on winter storage what can stay outside from one season to the next.

Six pieces for a Pyla terrace

Satriya is made entirely of pale reclaimed teak slats, with not a single cushion: a 140 cm bench and two low lounge chairs, with openwork backs that let the air through. It is the lowest lounge set and the easiest to live with in the wind.

Uma pairs a three-seater sofa with an openwork back of vertical bars, which lets the eye travel through, and a lounge chair on compass-style legs, with beige linen cushions.

Puri is the most comfortable: a sofa and two lounge chairs with shells woven by hand in rope, in an openwork chequered weave, and thick removable cushions.

For a nap, the Rehat sun lounger sits on wheels: on decking, you follow it from shade to sun through the day, and its backrest reclines. The round Jupiter daybed, 178 cm across, finds its place at the end of the terrace, where the light lingers in the evening. The Langit bed, with its slatted roof, creates a room within a room: set to one side, it gives shade without cutting off the view.

All these pieces live indoors and out.

A house open in summer, closed in winter

Many Pyla villas live by the seasons: wide open from June to September, closed for the rest of the year. That argues for pieces that work indoors and out. In summer, the lounge set and the daybed are on the terrace; when the house closes, they come into the living room instead of spending the winter under a cover. One set of furniture serves both uses, and the terrace clears in one go when you leave.

Teak facing the Bay

In sun and sea spray, solid teak takes on a silver-grey patina within a few months, matching the wooden cladding and the pines. You can keep it or feed the wood: the article Weathered or oiled teak explains both.
